New Hampshire House of Representatives Overwhelmingly Rejects Senate Version of HB 1633 Loaded with Poison Pills

Concord NH May 30, 2024In a significant victory for entrepreneurs and advocates across the state, the New Hampshire House of Representatives has defeated HB 1633 as amended by the Senate. The Senate bill was loaded with bad policies including new criminal penalties, continued arrests until 2026,  the State being ‘in the business’ rather than acting solely as a regulator (and much more).

The bill was decisively voted down with 252 representatives opposing and 117 in favor.

The defeat of HB 1633 is a testament to the collective efforts of business owners, advocates, and organizations who tirelessly campaigned against the bill’s prohibitive measures. The proposed legislation would have created substantial barriers for small businesses and entrepreneurs eager to enter and thrive in New Hampshire’s burgeoning legal cannabis market.

The NH Cannabis Association (NHCann), a leading advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the interests of cannabis businesses in New Hampshire, played a pivotal role in mobilizing opposition to the bill. Through grassroots efforts, media outreach, and a mobile billboard campaign highlighting the Soviet-style, heavy handed over-regulation that HB 1633 would bring, NHCann successfully educated legislators about the bill’s impact on economic opportunity for residents, local businesses and the state’s economy.

“Today’s vote is a victory for the residents of the State of New Hampshire that are desperate for economic opportunity, and for that we thank the House of Representatives,” said Daryl Eames, Founder of NHCann. “The defeat of HB 1633 and subsequent vote opens the door to further negotiations to fix the bill before we pass it.“

“The Governor recently stated there were changes made in the Senate that he was not necessarily looking for. It’s time for him to share what those are. It’s time for the Senate to come to the table and negotiate in good faith to compromise and produce a bill that ensures a functional model free from Government manipulation that provides maximum opportunity for residents to enter and compete.”

“This outcome would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our community and the tireless efforts of our advocates. We remain committed to fostering a business environment that supports growth, opportunity, and prosperity for all.”

The defeat of HB 1633 marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to establish a vibrant legal cannabis market in New Hampshire with widely distributed economic opportunity. NHCann will continue to work towards reforms that benefit small businesses and entrepreneurs, ensuring a thriving cannabis industry in the state for all.
